If you are looking for a quality spa experience, look no further than Austin. While today there are more spas than there are Starbucks, finding the perfect spa for you doesn’t have to be difficult.

What should you look for? If you are familiar with spas, then you may know exactly what it is you want, whether that is a massage, mineral bath or mud treatment. As far as the quality of these treatments, here you will have to trust companies like spafinder.com who rate spas. There are rating systems through online companies like Trip Advisor and such as well.

Before searching out the spa for you, decide what you are looking for ahead of time. Are you looking for a massage or a massage and mud bath followed by a salt cleanse? The next thing on your list is to get the best therapist at the spa. Finding a good therapist is sometimes tricky. One cannot call a spa and ask for their best as it is most likely the person answering the phone will tell you everybody is great. You might start by asking who is the most popular or who is the most booked?

If you are new to the spa and the various types of treatments they offer, here are a few things to look for. Some of these trends are brand new, others are continued favorites. These include:

1. Mineral Baths – Therapeutic mineral baths date back to ancient times. Nothing beats the revitalizing feeling of a great mineral bath. If you are interested in one of these, consult your doctor first. The mineral bath treatment is typically in very hot water, which can be contradictory to those with hypertension, heart disease, pregnancy and several other conditions. There are mineral baths offered in warm, cool and even cold water as well. The value of a mineral bath lies in its acidic neutral pH. Some mineral baths have bicarbonate and carbon dioxide gases in them which are thought to increase blood circulation by opening up the blood vessels. With increased blood circulation throughout the body, one is getting more oxygen delivered to their cells. Mineral baths are also good for the adrenal glands, stress, and the endocrine system.

2. Salt Rooms and Salt Caves – This is a new trend and yet an old tradition. Salt has many benefits to the skin, lungs and sinuses. A microclimate is created by infusing salt and negative ions into the air. Many are using Himalayan dry rock salt, which is said to have great healing powers. Being in a salt room or salt cave is likened to the rejuvenation one gets from being on the ocean. What are the other benefits of salt? It is a natural antihistamine, it is vital for extracting acidity from cells, it is a diuretic, it is vital for the kidneys, it is used to treat emotional and affective disorders, it preserves serotonin and melatonin levels in the brain, it is a natural antioxidant, it is vital for sleep regulation, and the list goes on and on.

3. Mud Therapy – Mud baths are also ancient treatments still being used today. Many think the minerals in the soil have healing powers to refresh the body. Mud therapy is usually done with clay taken at least four inches below the surface of the earth. The mud is applied as a mud pack. Mud packs can heal chronic inflammation, increase blood circulation, energize skin tissue, and absorb toxins from the skin. The clay is mixed with warm water and developed into a paste that is cooled and spread on a strip of cloth. The cloth is wrapped around your body with the mud toward the body. The mud is usually applied for ten to thirty minutes. Some spas also use various types of mud which include peat, peloid, and parafango.

This list represent only a small portion of what a spa offers. A good spa should also provide a quiet, relaxing atmosphere with simple décor, meditative music and staff that are polite and friendly. The perfect spa experience doesn’t have to be expensive, just of great quality.
